Fact Sheet
Biodiesel is a cleaner-burning alternative fuel for all conventional, unmodified diesel engines. Over 30 million miles have been driven in the US on biodiesel, and it has been used for over 20 years in Europe. Since biodiesel is domestically produced - usually from vegetable oils - it reduces our dependence on foreign oil. It is healthier, non-toxic, environmentally friendly, and has greater lubricity which will help extend the life of your diesel engine by reducing friction. It is 10 times less toxic than table salt, and biodegrades faster than sugar.
The cleaner emissions profile of biodiesel can help Houston reach the Clean Air Act deadline of 2010. If the deadline is not met, sanctions will be imposed upon the region including a loss of over $1 billion a year in federal highway funds and strict limitations on future economic growth.
Biodiesel gives off 50% less carbon monoxide (smog and ozone), 50% less particulate matter (a contributing factor in respiratory disease), 70% less hydrocarbons (smog and ozone), and no sulfur or volatile organic compounds.* Not only that, but biodiesel replaces the exhaust odor of petroleum diesel with a pleasant smell of popcorn or french fries.
